Yes, read Book 0 first if you are new to Trap of Desire. Book 0 is free, complete, and designed as the entry point. It introduces Luna, Leonard, the Caravaggio anthology, and the forty-three pages that make Sophia's story sharper.

The Ghost Who Stayed can stand alone emotionally, but it is not the best first door. It is the second door. The universe is built that way on purpose.

Why Book 0 Comes First

Book 0 gives you the central object: the damaged Caravaggio anthology with the manuscript pages inside. It also gives you Luna's position as the person who finds something Leonard did not choose to give her.

Without that discovery, Sophia's story is still moving. With that discovery, Sophia's story becomes charged with context. You understand what the manuscript becomes after it leaves the private history of her relationship with Leonard.

What Book 1 Adds

Book 1 turns toward the past. It shows Sophia's four years with Leonard, the texture of their intimacy, and the way an unfinished relationship can become part of a manuscript's structure.

It does not repeat Book 0. It reframes it. That is why the reading order matters. You first encounter the mystery as Luna does. Then you enter the history that made the mystery possible.

If You Already Started Book 1

Do not panic. You have not ruined the experience. If you are already reading The Ghost Who Stayed, you can continue, then return to Book 0. The universe rewards backward reading because its objects are designed to change meaning when reread.

What the Order Actually Changes

Both books stand alone. The question is not comprehension, it is dramatic irony, and the order decides who knows more, you or the narrator.

Read Book 0 first and you spend Book 1 knowing something Sophia does not: where the manuscript ends up, and who is going to find it. Every scene involving the pages carries a weight she cannot feel. That is the intended experience, and it is why the series is numbered the way it is.

Read Book 1 first and you arrive at Book 0 already knowing why Leonard withholds. Luna's discovery in Chapter 1 then reads as a rescue rather than an accident. That is a coherent experience too. It is simply a different book.

The Timeline Argument

There is a concrete reason to take Book 0 first, and it is easy to miss. Book 1 covers four years that end after Book 0, not before it.

The last chapter is dated to a March, and the address Sophia walks to is one she only knows because of something said the previous December. Book 0 ends in that December. A reader coming the other way arrives at the final scene without recognising the street or the woman on the third floor, and the image loses most of its charge.

If You Have Already Started Book 1

Keep going. Do not stop and restart, and do not feel you have spoiled anything structural. The books were built to survive being read in either direction, and Book 1 has its own ending that resolves on its own terms.

What you should do is read Book 0 immediately afterwards rather than treating it as a prequel you can skip. The reread effect runs both ways, and going 1 then 0 gives you a different but equally complete version.
